What are the risk factors for conversion to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS)?

As this question is still heavily debated, a longitudinal study was undertaken “to determine the demographic, clinical and paraclinical features that influence the risk of conversion to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis”.  Led by former CORe fellow, Dr Adam Fambiatos,  the study leveraged MSBase Registry data, with 15,717 patients included in the primary analysis.

The outcomes of study were that the “risk of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis increases with age, duration of illness and worsening disability and decreases with improving disability. Therapy may delay the onset of secondary progression”.
